Well done to all those students who participated in the Trócaire 'Blue Day' recently. This was to highlight the difficulties people face all over the world in relation to climate change, hunger, homelessness, and persecution. Students, who wore blue on the day, also participated in sponsored silences, fasting or doing without social media for 24 hours. Many thanks to all religion teachers in St. Mary's for organising the event this Lent.
Class 1D did a Wellbeing project last Thursday 15th March which involved foregoing their mobile phones/ internet access/ access to social media for 24 hours. Parents and guardians were involved and were very supportive. Some even went 24 hours without their devices at home too! The aim of the project was to raise awareness regarding phone overuse and abuse, as well as to shine a light on the impact phones have on ‘real world’ friendships and communication.
After the project, the 1Ds completed an evaluation exercise in groups. Many students realised that they are very dependent on their phones and on social media in general, that they overuse their phones, spend too much time focusing on them and concluded that they could use their devices less often.
Some students reported that they did more exercise on Thursday, several found they were able to concentrate better on homework due to the absence of the mobile phone distraction and some students found that they slept better. Well done to Ms. O'Gorman and 1D for this worthwhile exercise.
