Girls from St. Mary's raise €1864.00 for aid agency for the Philippines

The class of 3M from St. Mary’s college in Naas raised an outstanding €1,864.00 for Plan Ireland, an aid agency working in the Philippines. As part of their C.S.P.E Action Project the class decided that they wanted to help those in need in the Philippines after seeing the devastation broadcasted across the news. It only took the girls four days to organise the very successful fundraiser.philippeans 1The girls created large poster boards which depicted the devastation by the typhoon and went around to all the classes in the school with the aim of educating the students about the disaster and raising awareness of the emergency funding that was needed. The girls continued throughout the week raising awareness throughout the school using posters and presentations and asking all students to donate as little as one euro towards helping them raise the money.

After collecting money for just two days from staff and students they were able to raise an amazing €1864.00 for the charity. philippeans 4Sabrina Kevany, the spokesperson for Plan Ireland said that the money which they raised will go towards Phase 2 of the project and enable them to build temporary learning spaces (€1500) due to the high number of classrooms damaged and or completely destroyed. It will also provide teaching and learning material (€250) and training for up to fifty teachers (€100). imagesP60RGZY4The girls had originally set an ambitious target of raising €1000 euro and were shocked by the generosity of the school community. The girls and their teacher Ms O’ Shea are currently looking into more ways in which they can raise more money for those affected by the typhoon disaster. Ms O’ Shea commented on how hard the girls worked and was delighted to see them work so hard to raise funds for those in need.

Ms O’ Shea and her students would like to thank all of the staff, students and parents who kindly donated money to this worthy cause.
