Senior Hockey Match Report
Loreto Beaufort V St. Mary's College
On Monday 5th October, St. Mary’s Senior Hockey Team travelled to Rathfarnham to play Loreto Beaufort. This was the first match of the season and a great start it proved to be. There was great team spirit throughout the game and it really showed through the players’ hard work. Loreto Beaufort were a good team but the Naas girls took control of the match, winning six short corners and dominating for long spells of the game. All of the team's hard work paid off in the 16th minute when Isabel Connors scored the first goal of the game to give the visiting side the lead.
During the second half the girls played with the same determination and fight. In the final minute of the game Eilis Kenny won the ball just outside the opposition's circle and showing some great individual skill beat several defenders before scoring the game's second goal. The game finished shortly after this giving Naas the well deserved 2-0 victory. This was a squad performance with each individual playing a huge role in their team's victory. Emma Martin played very well in goal, saving her team's lead on several occasions. The Forwards and mid-fielders worked very well together and this proved to be one of our greatest strengths as the Loreto defense learned any time they tried to clear the ball. The defenders, when called upon, did their job and so Loreto did not score and only won one short corner. It was a great game that everyone put their hearts into and the desired result was achieved. Well done to all the girls and Ms.Howard their coach for the fantastic win and a great start to the hockey season.
The Squad for the game was captained by Rose Mernagh and consisted of the following players, Emma Martin, Eilis Kenny , Robyn Fahey, Emily Merrick , Annemarie Freeley , Ailbhe Gallagher, Katie Smirnova, Daisymae Earley, Isabel Connors, Alice Hennley, Isobel O' Beirne Morrissey, Katie Dempsey, Niamh Bergin , Anna Cleary, Ciara Friel and Aoibhin Fitzsimons.
