Hockey News – September to November
This year in St. Mary’s we have five hockey teams, two first year teams, a minor team, junior team and senior team. Coaching this year we have Mr. Brogan, Ms. Howard, Ms. McGoran. Training takes place on Monday and Tuesday at lunch time and Wednesday and Thursday after school. All teams have started their league campaigns with mixed results.
The first year teams play in an eight a-side league. The “A” team have played one game against Glendalough and came through 3-2 as victors after a very close game. Best for the team that day were Laosie Lenehan, Niamh O’ Brien and Rebecca Johnson who played her first game as goal keeper. The girls have three more group matches to play, Notre Dame, Dominican College Wicklow and St. Mary’s Arklow.
The “B” team have played two games away to Wesley College where they came up against a very strong team. It was the girls' first game and did very well to keep the Dublin side scoreless in the second half. This opening tough game proved a great learning experience for the girls as in their next game they played very well and were unlucky not to come away with a win against Loreto Bray the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Best for the first years in these games were, Aislinn Bambeury, Lara Oheinigh, Niamh Fitzpatrick and Ciara Murphy. The girls have three more group games against Holy Child Killiney, Kings Hospital and Muckross Park.
The minor team have played two games both of which were very close but unfortunately the girls came out the wrong side on both occasions losing 1-0 to both Dominican College Wicklow and Sion Hill. The girls are improving with each match and training very hard so hopefully their next league game in December against Holy Faith Clontarf will yield a more positive result.
The junior team have had a mixed start contesting a 0-0 draw with Notre Dame in their first game and losing thier second game 4-2 to Loreto Balbriggan. The girls are out again on Wednesday 12th of November against Manor house and have two more matches following that to Holy Faith Clontarf and St. Raphaela's.
The Senior team have played two games drawing with Notre Dame 1-1 and losing 1-0 to Sion Hill. The girls have three more league games to play against Cross and Passion, St. Wolstans and Skerries.
Ploughing Championships
At 8:45 on that Thursday morning, 130 Transition Years trudged into the assembly hall kitted out with rain jackets, backpacks and most importantly, wellies. We boarded the bus for Stradbally and set off on our way.
After a while travelling, we began to see massive balloons dotted across the sky in the distance. This was a sure sign that we were almost there.
After getting off the bus we walked across a field towards the entrance. As we entered we were each given a green luminous wristband- definitely something to keep for the TY journal!
The teachers established a point where we were to meet back at 12:30, and then we were free to go. There was an endless amount of white stalls as far as the eye could see, each stall trying to sell and promote their own product but more importantly giving away free things like bags, wristbands and pens!
There were plenty of animals to be seen such as, prize winning cows and sheep. Of course, as the name suggests, you could also stop to watch the fields being ploughed!
After meeting up for roll-call at 12:30, food was on most people’s minds, and there was no shortage of it. From fish and chips to fresh lemonade there was something for everyone. There was even strawberries and chocolate for those who fancied a bit of dessert! After grabbing a bite to eat there was just enough time to pick up some more free stuff before heading back to our meeting point.
At 2:30 we boarded the bus again, absolutely exhausted. It had been a great day and we didn’t even need our rain jackets!
